The best armor against dishonest buyers is basic knowledge about the item you’re selling. Say, for example, you’re going to sell a coin. At the least, know what makes a coin valuable. That said, a coin’s value is influenced by four factors: coin grade, its rarity, the year minted, and the mintmark.
Grade. The grade determines the condition of a coin. The higher the grade, the better the condition and the higher its value. Numismatists grade a coin by assigning it a number from 1 to 70 on the Sheldon Scale. The closer to 70, the better the condition. For comparison, the grade of mint state or uncirculated coins ranges between 60 and 70, making them the most valuable.
Rarity. Like any other commodity, the rule of supply and demand applies in coins. It means that coins with higher demand are more valuable. In general, rare coins are expensive because they are always sought after by coin collectors.
Year minted. There are coin collectors who prefer a certain year a coin was minted. It can be because of sentimental value or because it has a unique design.
Mintmark. The mintmark is the letter that denotes where a coin was made. It can be P, D, O, S, W for Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Westpoint, respectively. The mintmark affects value because it can denote its rarity. An epitome of this is the S-1894 Barber Dime. The San Francisco Mint only struck 24 Barber Dimes in 1894, making it one of the rarest and most expensive U.S. Coin.
